Happy Mail - Rubber StampsPINIMAGE

With the modern technology we have accessible to us these days it’s nice and very unexpected to receive something in the mail. That to me is “HAPPY MAIL”! I call it going “OLD School”! There is something to be said about going to the mail box and receiving a card, invite or thank you card. I’m one of those people who still loves to sit on the couch and crack open a book and turn the pages by hand. I will still read ebooks and blogs online don’t get me wrong but I enjoy having a bookmark mark my page and writing things down on paper.

My friends over at Rubber Stamps  created a custom stamp for Design And Unwind and I absolutely love it! The tag line on it says “Where the party at” as we host a few workshops at different places and thought that would be a fun way to stamp the cards. I was able to create my own stamp file including my logo and the process is super easy. They offer multiple size options and a variety of pre-made stamps to choose from. I fell in love with these pre made stamps, #happy mail and the paper airplane. What better way to send out some custom cards then by embellishing them with some clever stamps.

Vanilla and Strawberry Mousse CocktailPINIMAGE

A dear friend recently introduced me to Chopin Vodka. I had never tasted this vodka before but I am always willing to try new things. Guys, it was love at first taste! LOL It was not only smooth but had good flavor with no harsh back band. I first tasted it with orange juice and then straight over ice with olives. After that I knew I had to try something else with it. You know me, I had to turn it into something sweet. Last year, I made a Strawberry Lemonade Granita and Pineapple Mango Sorbet using Svedka Vodka Now Chopin is a potato based vodka and top shelf and worth every penny! I traveled far here in AZ to get this vodka, as some of the local liquor stores did not carry it. I finally found it at BevMo in Peoria, I was thrilled and the staff was great! Now, let’s talk a little bit about my favorite liquor store back home. It’s called Rishi’s International Beverage located in Grand Rapids Michigan. I can’t say enough about this place. Rishi and his staff are incredible! They are friendly and very knowledgeable. The beverage selection is nothing less than out of this world. They carry it all and if they don’t,  just ask Rishi and he will get it in for you! It’s like being a kid at a candy store where theres so many options and treats to choose from! I will actually be writing a full post in the up coming weeks telling you guys all about it.

Now back to Goodness in a cup! With summer coming to an end I wanted to make one last boozy treat. I decided to make a vanilla and strawberry mousse dessert with my new found love Chopin Vodka. This could be served after an outdoor evening dinner or simply as a single cocktail among friends. After a few different attempts I was very pleased with the results. It was smooth and refreshing which is always a plus in the summer time. I shared two different options for you to try. I prefer a smooth mousse with the strawberry blended inside however I also cut up the strawberries and mixed them in the mousse which gave you little strawberry bites inside.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 5-6 – Tablespoons of Chopin Vodka
  • 1 box of Instant Vanilla Pudding
  • 1 1/2 cups of Whipping Cream
  • 2 – Vanilla pudding cups
  • 4-6 Strawberries and additional for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS:

Begin by mixing your whipping cream and instant pudding mix until soft peaks form.

If you want the strawberry flavor to be smooth, you will want to place your strawberries in a blender then add to your pre made mixture and mix again.

Now if you want your mousse to have little strawberry bites you will want to cut up your strawberries into small squares and then add them to your pre made mixture. It’s your personal preference.

Once you have you have mixed in your strawberries you will want to add your vodka and vanilla pudding cups until your mixture is stiff.

Goodness in a cup is ready to serve and garnish with a strawberry!

As our kiddos head back to school this year, one of my favorite things to do is come up with a fun and clever pencil case! Remember those cute little pencil cases I did in previous years like, Pencil me in and Write that down. This year is no exception! I decided to go with a slightly larger pouch since the girls are getting older and they have more supplies. I stumbled upon these grey & pink zipped pouches on one of my many trips to Target and knew they would be perfect! Have you guys noticed how cute all the back to school supplies have gotten? One of my favorite things to do as a kid was go with my mom shopping for back to school and picking out my backpack. I always thought, it all starts with the backpack! Once I knew what my backpack looked like I could pick out the rest of my school supplies. Why you may ask? I wanted to either color coordinate or base it all on designs. LOL It would drive my mom crazy but after a while she just went with the flow. She would say “As long as your happy honey, then mom’s happy”! Gosh I miss her. Now I have the absolute privilege to do that with my own girls.

Being able to customize folders, backpacks, pencil cases and so much more has been made easy by using my Silhouette Cameo 3. Especially with so many kids having some of the same supplies, your kiddos can recognize their items without a problem.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Begin by downloading the design above.

You will want to decide the size of your text then measure your zipped pouch to ensure you will be satisfied with the results.

Once you have opened your file you will want to resize your text to fit. One of the most important things to keep in mind when cutting heat transfer projects is that your design needs to be mirrored before cutting.

Prep your Silhouette file to send to print and load your pink heat transfer vinyl onto your Silhouette cutting mat. Make sure you place the shiny side down onto your mat. This will put the adhesive side or back side of your heat transfer up.

Once your files have been cut unload your design and weed it.

Place your cut design onto your zipped pouch and make sure your happy with placement. You will want to grab a piece of material to place on top of your design before you begin to press down on your iron. I made sure to heat up the iron before hand.

Make sure to press firmly down onto your design and apply a lot of pressure to ensure your design does not peel over time. With this material I pressed down a few different times, each time for 45-60 seconds before lifting my iron off the design.

Now you may peel back the clear sheet carefully and slowly to make sure it adhered to your material.

Cactus & Coffee DIY TumblerPINIMAGE

DIY Vinyl TumblerPINIMAGE

Morning coffee is a must at my house. There is something particularly magical about brewing a pot of coffee first thing in the morning. Yes, I said magical. Who else here is a coffee friend? I typically have anywhere from 3 to 4 cups of coffee every morning. I’m also one of those people that casually sips all day without a problem. One thing that I truly loathe is taking a drink only to find I already have to reheat it. UGH! One of my dear friends gifted me with an insulated tumbler this spring, and it has been glorious. It keeps my hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold for most of the day. I have even left ice in it overnight to find it still there in the morning. WHAT?! I was sold!

I loved my new tumbler so much that I couldn’t wait for the opportunity to share them with friends. There is a small group of us neighbors that meet weekly for what’s been dubbed as “Cactus & Coffee”. One morning, as we met for coffee, my friend’s handle suddenly broke off of her mug. Yikes! Talk about needing these mugs like yesterday. I’m obsessed with all things cacti, I wanted to play on the name and created a meaningful design where the coffee mug represented a pot, and the coffee beans on the cactus represented cactus blossoms. What would I do without my Silhouette? Aren’t these so much fun?

INSTRUCTIONS:

Begin by downloading the design and simply changing your name.

Once you have opened your file and made your name change, you will want to resize it to fit your insulated tumbler.

Prep your Silhouette file to send to print and load your Black vinyl onto your Silhouette Cameo 3. You will want to prep your flowers and load your pink vinyl to cut.

Once your files have been cut, remove the access vinyl and apply your transfer paper to your cut vinyl design.

You will want to clean and dry your tumbler before applying your vinyl to ensure it stays. At this point, you will want to center your design on your tumbler before setting it in place. Make sure you rub it in place for a few seconds before you start to remove your transfer paper.

Now, you can apply your pink flower cut outs to the tops of your cactus design.

Flamingo Friday DIY Invites! These are a super cute idea for any flamingo party!PINIMAGE

t’s summertime, which means plenty of outdoor gatherings and a lot more fun! Have any of you ever watched HGTV‘s Curb Appeal? I love to watch and gain creative inspiration from most of the shows on their network. One night, the episode called “A Close-Knit Neighborhood Gets Three Curb Appeal Makeovers in a Row” aired. A group of close-knit neighbors gathered for a casual block party every Friday night. This is where the flamingo comes in, the reason for my appeal. See what I did there? A flamingo was secretly passed around, and whoever ended up with the flamingo in their yard got to host the block party that week. One family never seemed to end up with the flamingo in their yard, so they suspected it had to do with their lack of curb appeal. HGTV swooped in and dramatically changed the look of their front yard, along with two other neighbors. The flamingo finally landed in their yard! I was so touched by the sense of community those neighbors shared. They were really more like a big family! I thought to myself I would love to do that someday if I ever ended up in a neighborhood like that! I finally got the chance. I couldn’t wait to implement this incredible idea that I’ve literally had bookmarked for years!

Making the flamingo invites to introduce this idea to my neighbors was the most exciting part. I headed to Target, my home away from home, first. I found the perfect-sized pink flamingos in the dollar spot, and ended up buying everything they had! Target never lets me down! Now, as many of you already know, it’s no secret how much I LOVE to use my Silhouette Cameo 3. I used it to created a fun flamingo invite that clearly explained the concept, and attached it to the plastic flamingo with ribbon. I was tickled pink with how they turned out, and didn’t spare any time delivering them! I am pleased to announce that Flamingo Friday is officially a thing. We are a flock of five families and growing.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Begin by purchasing and downloading your files from the Silhouette Design store, or feel free to create your own.

Once you have opened your file, you will want to see what size you would like to make your invite. I made my invite larger than the plastic flamingo to ensure I could easily be read and would stand out. You could make it way smaller if you wish. The size of my invite is 6.965 high x 3.804 wide.

Prep your Silhouette file to print & cut. Then send your file to print.

At this point you will place your printed file onto your cutting mat, and send it to your Silhouette to cut.

Once your files have been cut, remove it from your mat and attach it to your flamingo with your choice of ribbon or twine. Now you’re ready to flamingle with your neighbors!

Flamingo Friday Party Idea!PINIMAGE

DIY Flamingo Friday Invites!PINIMAGE

Once you have made your Flamingo Friday invites, hand-deliver them to your neighbors and let the party begin! My neighbors, now friends, and I have had about three gatherings so far. We keep it simple by having a feature cocktail along with some light snacks and simple activities for the kids. This could be sidewalk chalk, ring toss or even just coloring books and crayons. The possibilities are endless. Flamingo Friday is a fantastic way to keep in touch with your neighbors and welcome in new ones. Not to mention excitement and anticipation from never knowing where the flamingo will end up! We all live such busy lives, and this is just creates an opportunity to squeeze in just a little time each week to catch up, mingle and relax. Most importantly, it creates an opportunity to get to know neighbors you may not otherwise ever have had a chance to see. Do you have any fun summer neighborhood traditions?
